MSC reaffirms commitment to Port of Liverpool

A senior delegation from Mediterranean Shipping Company UK Limited (MSC) reaffirmed their commitment to the Port of Liverpool during a visit to the Port on 22 February. Together with Peel Ports Group (Containers) Commercial team, members of MSC’s Commercial and Trade teams spent the day seeing the Port’s infrastructure and capability for themselves, before developing a joint strategy that will support customers seeking to import their cargo closer to its end destination in the northern hinterland of the UK.

With approximately 30% of the market within Liverpool’s natural hinterland and 60% of the UK and Ireland closer to the Port of Liverpool compared to southern UK ports, there is an increasing demand for shipping services to offer a northern load/discharge option.

MSC’s UK West Coast Service, already a vital link between Türkiye and Liverpool, offers customers a reliable route for cargo transportation between the UK and European markets, but also provides customers with reliable ‘mother vessel to mother vessel’ transhipment between India, Pakistan and the Far East to the key UK West Coast port of Liverpool. By leveraging this product to bring cargo closer to its end destination, cargo owners are able to reduce supply chain cost and carbon emissions, whilst also increasing supply chain reliability and certainty, avoiding unnecessary complexity and duration of inland distribution to/from southern ports.

U.S Seaway delegates visit the Port of Liverpool to discuss transatlantic trade collaboration

At the end of February the Port of Liverpool hosted UK Government representatives and delegates from the GLSLS (Great Lakes St. Lawrence Seaway) a 2,342 mile long stretch of water that borders two countries, eight U.S. states and two Canadian provinces.

The GLSLS is a vastly under-utilised international waterway that has multiple ports on both the Canadian and US side. Delegates visited to learn from the Port of Liverpool on their Customer-focused strategy and how strides can be made to generate more trade between the ports.

Liverpool’s location on the UK west coast is ideal for the transport of goods across the Atlantic Sea With continued collaboration we hope to increase trade, to ultimately improve efficiencies for end users and make significant inroads into our Net Zero Carbon pledge.

A Liverpool case study: Peel Ports Logistics

Peel Ports Logistics, part of the Peel Ports Group, offer port-centric and eco-friendly end-to-end logistics solutions. MECORE a leader in the European waste market helps companies with existing and innovative recycling solutions and energy supplies.

Using a network of agents, MECORE is the connecting factor in combining supply and demand, processing capabilities, logistics and quality management into a meaningful and profitable long-term solution for all parties involved in the supply chain.

A recent project involved cargoes of 2000–3000 tonnes of recycled wood material shipped from Netherlands to the UK. Due to the lightweight nature of the recycled wood material, it required an efficient handling and excellent transport service, ensuring safe and efficient loading, discharging and delivery, whilst also avoiding exposure to demurrage charges. Working together Peel Ports and Peel Ports Logistics were able to execute a port-centric and eco-friendly solution. Whereas this type of product would conventionally be delivered by road, the solution by sea significantly reduced road miles and almost halved the carbon footprint of this supply chain.

Jack Jennison, Managing Director, MECORE said: “We have carried out a lot of exports from the UK over the past decade, however, this was our first project to supply directly into the UK. As we were unable to be present on site, we took a small leap of faith and placed all confidence in our business partners to ensure the job went smoothly and I am pleased to say it was a great success.”
