One of the UK’s leading importers of fresh fruit is looking to increase volumes via Liverpool and hopes more shipping lines will introduce calls to the port. Here, Andrew Gilding, Managing Director of Peter Gilding & Company Ltd explains why…
Established in 1986, we at Peter Gilding import fresh produce from all over the world, including South America, South Africa and around the Mediterranean. Our customers include Aldi in the UK and Ireland, Spar, Home Bargains and various wholesale businesses throughout the country.
So we know a good bit about the fresh produce industry and what it takes to be successful. Getting the supply chain right is obviously important with any goods, but with time-critical ones such as fruit it really is a matter of make-or-break for our customers.
We work with select freight forwarders and approved hauliers to ensure that our in-house logistics team is able to deliver top quality produce at the right place and the right time. In fact, we supervise the complete chain from the overseas grower packing the container to arrival at our modern storage facilities in Knowsley on Merseyside.
Our location in the North West means we’re ideally located to supply many of the warehouse and distribution centres located anywhere from the Midlands to the North. We also benefit from our proximity to the Port of Liverpool, where we already import large container volumes from various European markets.
In common with the rest of our supply chain, the service we receive at Liverpool is reliable and efficient – two absolutely essential features for such a time-sensitive business as ours. In 2019 we’re aiming to increase the number of containers going through the port. It would benefit our business for more cargo owners and shipping lines to look at Liverpool as a destination. The South East is already terribly congested and we only expect this to get worse, especially with Brexit.
For us, shipping via the North West is not only a viable option, it’s increasingly the most attractive route to success.
