Driving Environmental Performance

Our sites operate ISO 14001 certified Environmental Management Systems which help us monitor performance, manage environmental risks, maintain compliance and continually improve the way we operate. Through audits, inspections and performance reporting, we identify opportunities to reduce environmental impacts and support sustainable operations across the business.

We monitor resource consumption, emissions, environmental incidents and near misses across our operations to help identify trends and drive improvement. Supported by annual environmental objectives and targeted initiatives under the EHS plan, we use data and specialist expertise to continually improve our environmental performance.

Climate Change

We have adopted a Group Climate Change Policy and are forming a Climate Change Steering Group, containing leaders from across the business to drive progress in the areas of climate change adaptation and mitigation.

In response to an invitation from Defra to participate in the 4th round of Climate Change Adaptation Reporting for the Ports of Liverpool and Sheerness, we submitted a Climate Change Adaptation Report to Defra for these ports in December 2024.

Marine Environment

Our Group Marine Environmental Team supports the delivery of good environmental practice across our marine operations, helping ensure
compliance with environmental legislation and statutory responsibilities. Working closely with local teams and stakeholders, they develop practical and sustainable solutions that protect the marine environment and drive continual improvement across our ports.

Waste

Effective waste management is a key part of how we minimise our environmental impact.

As a major port operator handling a wide range of commodities and activities, we generate diverse waste streams across our operations—from quaysides and terminals to warehouses and offices. These include both hazardous and non-hazardous materials, all of which must be managed responsibly.

We take a structured approach to managing waste across our sites. By monitoring waste at a cluster level, we can identify opportunities for improvement and drive more efficient practices. Increasing recycling rates is a key focus, supported through our Group EHS strategy, with a continued aim to reduce the amount of waste requiring disposal.

We are committed to diverting waste away from landfill. Through our partnerships with specialist waste contractors, general waste is either recycled or recovered for energy, while other waste streams are treated appropriately in line with regulatory requirements.

Case Study: PPE Recycling
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is essential to keeping our employees safe, but traditionally much of it has been treated as waste once it reaches the end of its useful life.

To reduce waste and support a more circular approach, Peel Ports Group works with specialist recycling contractor to recycle various PPE items that would otherwise be disposed of.

Through this process, PPE materials are recovered and transformed into new products, including:

  • Vehicle insulation and interior linings
  • Roofing and housing insulation products
  • Weed control and landscaping mats
  • Other recycled construction and manufacturing materials

By diverting PPE from disposal routes and returning materials back into the supply chain, this initiative helps reduce waste, conserve resources and support the circular economy.

The project demonstrates how practical partnerships and innovative recycling solutions can help turn everyday waste streams into valuable resources, supporting our commitment to improving environmental performance across the business.

Pollution Prevention

Protecting the environment from pollution is a fundamental part of how we operate. Many of our ports are located close to environmentally sensitive waterways, habitats and protected areas, making effective pollution prevention and response essential to our operations.

To help protect these environments, all Peel Ports sites implement controls and procedures designed to prevent pollution incidents and minimise environmental impacts. This includes the management of fuels, oils, chemicals and other potentially polluting substances, alongside regular inspections and audits to ensure controls remain effective.

All ports maintain Oil Spill Contingency Plans in accordance with statutory requirements, supported by site-specific emergency response procedures. Employees receive regular training and participate in spill response exercises to ensure incidents can be managed quickly, safely and effectively should they occur.

We continuously monitor environmental incidents and near misses across the Group, investigating events, sharing lessons learned and identifying opportunities for improvement. This approach helps us strengthen our controls, improve preparedness and continually enhance our environmental performance.

Biodiversity and Conservation

Many of our sites are located alongside environmentally important habitats and protected areas, including Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs), Special Areas of Conservation (SACs) and Special Protection Areas (SPAs). We recognise our responsibility to ensure that our operations do not adversely impact these sensitive environments and the wildlife they support. Protecting biodiversity is an important part of our environmental approach. Through dedicated management systems, environmental controls and our Biodiversity and Conservation Policy, we work to protect, maintain and where possible enhance natural habitats across the areas in which we operate.

Our approach is supported by environmental legislation and includes the management of activities such as land use, habitat protection, invasive species control and the protection of nesting birds both on land and within the marine environment.

Protecting Biodiversity

We seek to understand and manage the environmental risks associated with our operations, helping ensure that protected habitats and species are safeguarded for future generations.

This includes:

  • Protecting habitats and wildlife across our sites
  • Considering biodiversity during operational planning
  • Managing invasive non-native species
  • Protecting nesting birds and sensitive species
  • Supporting habitat enhancement opportunities
  • Working with environmental stakeholders and regulators

Case Study: Frodsham and Woolston Deposit Grounds

The Frodsham and Woolston Deposit Grounds demonstrate how operational activities can contribute to biodiversity enhancement.
Dredged sediment from the Manchester Ship Canal is deposited within lagoons at these sites, where it naturally settles over time. This process has helped create extensive wetland and reedbed habitats that now support a diverse range of wildlife.

Today, these habitats provide important refuge and feeding grounds for wetland birds and other species, including marsh harriers and a variety of other wildlife associated with wetland environments.

The sites demonstrate how long-term environmental management can create significant biodiversity benefits, transforming operational land into valuable ecological assets that support both wildlife and conservation objectives.

Supporting Biodiversity for the Future

Through responsible environmental management, habitat protection and enhancement projects, Peel Ports Group is committed to supporting biodiversity and helping protect the natural environments that surround our operations.

Land Management

Peel Ports Group manages a diverse range of operational and non-operational land across the UK. Responsible land management helps us balance the needs of our operations with environmental protection, future development and long-term sustainability.

We focus on making effective use of our land assets, including opportunities to redevelop previously used land where appropriate. This supports sustainable growth while helping to reduce pressure on undeveloped land and ensuring environmental considerations are built into planning and decision-making.

Land management also includes maintaining site boundaries, managing vegetation and controlling invasive non-native species where they are identified. These activities help protect nearby habitats, reduce environmental risks and support responsible stewardship of the land around our operations.

Through effective planning, maintenance and environmental controls, we aim to manage our land safely, sustainably and in a way that supports both our business and the environments surrounding our sites.

This approach supports our wider environmental strategy by helping us manage risk, protect environmental value and make better use of existing land across Peel Ports Group.
