SOLAS container weighing

A load off your mind

Since July 2016, all laden export containers have been required to have a Verified Gross Mass declared by the shipper. The International Maritime Organization has been enforcing the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) convention requirements regarding the VGM of packed containers.

You can rest assured that all Peel Ports Container Terminals in the UK and Ireland have adopted this process to ensure your cargo meets these requirements.

Ports for SOLAS container weighing

Introduction

SOLAS Container Weighing solutions are currently available across all of our existing container terminals at Liverpool, Clydeport and Dublin.

Dublin

From July 2016, an amendment to the SOLAS Convention will require every loaded export container ship to have its weight verified before it’s loaded on to a ship.

With all containers converging on ports to be loaded on ships, terminals have been suggested as the most logical point in the supply chain to weigh boxes. Port of Dublin has undertaken a lengthy consultation process with the Maritime Coastguard Agency (MCA) and its customers to develop a system that will help avoid potential export disruption for exporters. The Port of Dublin will have the ability to weigh all containers as part of an in-process weighing scheme, which will not impact on productivity.

Liverpool

Introduction

To help its customers Peel Ports is offering shippers an efficient service to weigh laden export containers at its Liverpool, Dublin and Greenock terminals. The container terminals will install Dynamic Axle Weighbridges (DAW) at the terminal in-gates to offer an in-process weighing service. This DAW in conjunction with the Mass in Running Order (MIRO) of the vehicle will be used to provide the VGM.

This removes the need for shippers to arrange for the certified weight themselves. By offering this service, customers are assured that they have a solution in place, irrespective of the number of export containers that need to be weighed.
