Peel Ports Group has put the name of its new pilot boat to public vote from a shortlist of three suggestions by primary school pupils across the region.
Throughout the summer pupils have submitted their suggestions for the name of the new vessel which will be the first pilot boat to be ordered at the port of Great Yarmouth in almost 40 years.
Traditionally new vessels are named after the local rivers that join and flow through the port. However, with all these names already in use, Peel Ports has given the local community the power to decide the name of its new arrival.
A judging panel made up of Peel Ports Great Yarmouth employees and stakeholders narrowed the entries down to a final shortlist of three which will now be put to a public vote to decide the winning entry.
Voters can choose their favourite from the following:
- Haven Duchess
- Guiding Light
The winning name will be inscribed on the vessel’s stern during an official launch ceremony this autumn and the winning pupil will receive a VIP day for them and a family member at the port, including an exclusive trip on the new vessel.
The new pilot boat is expected to be delivered towards the end of October this year.
Richard Goffin, Port Director at Peel Ports Great Yarmouth, said: “The boat represents our ongoing commitment and investment in Great Yarmouth and will allow us to navigate visiting vessels safely in and out of the port.
“Each individual submission from primary school pupils across the area has been of a really high standard, encompassing the local and geographical significance our vessel names have always had.
“The three shortlisted names are all strong options and we look forward to seeing the public’s final decision inscribed on our new vessel this autumn.”
