Peel Ports Highly Commended as Port Operator of the Year

Peel Ports has been recognised by industry bible Lloyds List, beating off competition from the US and the Middle East to be runner-up in the port operator of the year category at its global awards ceremony.

The event took place at London’s Maritime Museum last night (Wednesday 28 September) and was attended by hundreds of leading figures from the sector.

The last 12 months have seen significant progress with several major infrastructure projects across the company’s estate, representing investment of more than £750m. These include the Liverpool2 container terminal construction, a new biomass terminal to support one of Europe’s biggest sustainability initiatives, the UK’s most advanced steel terminal and the Port Salford warehousing and distribution centre near Manchester.

Away from the North-west, Peel Ports has sought to strengthen its offering on the east coast by purchasing the Port of Great Yarmouth and investing in a new grain facility at Sheerness to support South-east farm exports.

The company has also secured a range of expanded or new shipping line services, including the return of Maersk to Liverpool for the first time in 10 years.

Mark Whitworth, Chief Executive of Peel Ports, said: “These are exciting times for our business, not just in Liverpool but across our whole portfolio. The continued renaissance of the Mersey maritime sector is very important of course but our strategy is about much more than one city or even just ports. With the supply chain become ever more integrated, our approach is to maximise the potential of our locations and wider network to provide efficiencies and create new opportunities.

“Shipping is absolutely critical to the whole economy and occasions such as this help us to celebrate that. So, we’re honoured to have been chosen from such strong competition and our sincere thanks go to the judges for recognising the benefits that our ambition is delivering for the North-west and the UK as a whole.”

The company was previously highly commended in the same category in 2014.
