PRESS RELEASE: FOR IMMEDIATE USE
Prestigious Containerisation International award recognises port for second time
The Port of Liverpool was today (18 June) awarded Port Authority of the Year at the global Containerisation International Awards held in London.
Owner and operator Peel Ports triumphed in its category for the second time in four years, beating other highly commended entries from ports across the world.
The annual awards, hosted by industry bible Containerisation International magazine, recognise excellence in the container shipping, ports and logistics industries from around the world, and are assessed by a select panel of distinguished judges.
The port was recognised for its progressive and innovative approach, as well as for its ambitious development plans. One of the UK’s largest port groups, Peel Ports is currently constructing its £300m landmark terminal expansion project, Liverpool2.
When completed by the end of 2015, the new terminal will create a state-of-the-art freight gateway as the UK’s most centrally located, deep water container terminal and will offer import and export companies located in the north west of the UK ‘ship-to-door’ solutions via sustainable transport routes such as the Manchester Ship Canal.
Patrick Walters, Group Commercial Director, Peel Ports, welcomed the award, saying:
“We are immensely proud to receive this recognition for the second time and would like to applaud the hard work of our employees in delivering the major expansion programme at Liverpool2.
Our ambition is to offer Europe’s most efficient and modern port operation. Liverpool2 has been designed to meet the evolving needs of not just the shipping industry but the whole supply chain. We look forward to helping customers deliver their goods to market, with reduced costs, less congestion and lower carbon emissions.
This award recognises our status as a port of global significance. To receive this accolade in the face of tough competition from our peers is a great platform for us to build on as the project reaches completion."
Liverpool2 has been constructed on 17 hectares of reclaimed land and will allow the port to significantly increase cargo capacity and deal with 26,000 vessel movements annually. Infrastructure improvements since the project launched in 2014 include investment exceeding £100m in state-of-the art crane technology, a new Terminal Operating System (TOS) and AutoGates.
Janet Porter, editor-in-chief for Containerisation International said
"The Containerisation International Awards provide us with the ideal opportunity to reward best practice, talent, endeavour, innovation and creative thinking.
The event provides the chance to network with industry peers and potential customers whilst celebrating the achievements of those companies and individuals that have made an outstanding contribution to the container shipping, ports and logistics industries.”
Ends: 19 June 2015

Notes to Editor:
Liverpool2 will allow global shippers ‘ship-to-door’ access to the UK's major import centres via the most economic and lowest carbon route, and provide northern UK-based exporters with a more competitive route to market. The £300m construction programme comprises a new quay wall, land reclamation to create the 16 hectare site, dredging of a new 16.5m deep berthing pocket, installation of eight 24-wide ship-to-shore quay cranes and 22 cantilever rail mounted gantry cranes, and associated supporting infrastructure works.
