Liverpool2 scoops investment of the year award

PRESS RELEASE: FOR IMMEDIATE USE

The new £300m container terminal at the Port of Liverpool has been recognised as the investment of the year at one of the North-West’s most prestigious events. Peel Ports picked up the gong at the Echo Regional Business Awards last night (Thursday 18 June) during a glittering ceremony in Liverpool’s St George’s Hall.

The awards, which are the largest and longest-running on Merseyside, saw Liverpool2 beat off competition from Jaguar Land Rover and St John’s Shopping Centre to pick up the coveted prize. The category recognises investments that have had a beneficial impact on both the business itself and the local economy. As well as Liverpool2 itself creating around 500 jobs, it is estimated that each job will lead to 10 indirect jobs, creating more than 5000 in the North- West region.

Liverpool2 will significantly increase capacity and improve performance at the UK’s most centrally-located deep water container port, creating a state-of-the-art freight gateway at the heart of Great Britain. The development will reaffirm Liverpool as the UK’s leading transatlantic port, whilst enabling direct market connections between the North-west and overseas markets.

Mark Whitworth, Chief Executive of Peel Ports, said:

“Our teams that have been involved in making Liverpool2 and our other developments happen should rightly be proud of this award. It’s fitting that the significance of our investments should be recognised in what is the 300th anniversary of the creation of the Port of Liverpool. The importance of the maritime and trading communities to the city and the North-west can’t be understated and we are delighted to be at the centre of creating a new future for both the region.”

As well as Liverpool2, Peel Ports has also invested elsewhere at the Port of Liverpool, including an £8 Million extension of its animal food warehouse to meet growing customer demand. It is the largest of its kind in the UK and has already seen record volumes through the improved facility, handling over 500,000 tonnes in the last year.

Ends: 19 June 2015
