Bulk gateway to the South-east

Bulk gateway to the South-east

Paul Barker, Port Director at Peel Ports’ London Medway cluster, explains why the company’s gateway to the South-east market is more important than ever.

In recent years there’s been a huge focus on the ‘Northern Powerhouse’ and the region’s economic potential. At Peel Ports we’re right behind that drive to help rebalance UK plc. But, of course, the South-east continues to be a hugely important area in its own right and, given its proximity to London, will always be one of the country’s major economic centres.

Even with continued political and business uncertainty, we’re still seeing that the rate of developments in the South-east is driving high volumes of steel and construction timber through the port. We’re also witnessing significant changes in how our cargo-owning customers are moving their goods of all types.

London Medway, with its lock-free access and significant port-centric logistics facilities, provides a natural gateway into the South-east for a range of consumer and industrial commodities, from new cars through forest products for the print and packaging sector and a wide range of steels for the construction and industrial markets.

Geographically, our location offers our customers the opportunities to exploit the London and South-eastern markets with an effective handling and stockholding solution on either a dedicated or common user base, supported by market-leading services and facilities in the automotive, forest products and metals markets.

Together these capabilities mean we’re the first point of intervention for many of our customers looking to achieve a modal shift from bulk volume into client-specific call-off volumes, enabling them to respond more efficiently and effectively to demand or opportunities with their end consumers.

We’re also looking to maximise the potential of the significant development land available in the area, supporting the increasing number of companies looking to achieve more efficient handling for imports and exports, or better manage their strategic stockholding requirements. If that sounds like you, we’d be delighted to tell you more about what’s happening at London Medway.
