‘Build it and I will fill it…’

Blog post by Ashley Piper – Sales Manager Mersey Cluster

…that’s the motto I live by as a bulk products sales manager for Peel Ports’ Mersey Cluster which includes Liverpool and Runcorn - and we’ve had no problem filling the 350,000 sq. ft. of warehousing space available.

Over the past five years since I started working at Peel Ports, tonnage handled at Runcorn Docks for example, has increased by 82% from an already impressive 325,722 tonnes in 2011 to an incredible 592,352 tonnes in 2016.

This growth is as a result of significant investment which equates to around £3.4million worth of improvements at Runcorn, including the renovation and development of its warehousing capabilities and the introduction of heavy lift and handling facilities.

In Liverpool in the last 18 months alone we’ve welcomed four new 94,000 sq. ft. units which have allowed us to grow our human and animal consumption products – handling over 1,500,000 tonnes of feed, grain and biomass for customers such as Drax and Frontier.

As a business our facilities at Liverpool and Runcorn have developed from having a focus on cargo handling to become an integral part of the Group’s solutions focused strategy, which seeks to work in partnership with customers to provide game-changing logistics solutions.

Newport Industries – a long standing Peel Ports customer – is a perfect example of this. Through a working partnership and a £7m investment, we supported the creation of a new bulk handling facility in the North West to service increased demand from its customer base.

The facility allowed the global firm – which specialises in importing dry bulk chemicals to the glass, adhesive, detergents, chemicals and feed industries – to access a deep-water entry point and add real value and cost savings to their supply chain.

In five years of working with Peel Ports, Newport Industries has increased the volume of bulk products handled through the North West by more than 200%.

We’re also working with Irish cement manufacturer Ecocem to brings its product to the UK market, investing £4m in a new facility at Runcorn which will service the needs of the North West construction industry.

The next 12 months across the Peel’s Mersey Cluster, will provide a new challenge of building on this growth and meeting the demand from our customers, growing not only volumes but the added value services we offer.

For me, I would like to see even more investment in warehousing across our Mersey division – we have the space, so why not use it to attract more volume in the bulks sector!
